Frequently Asked Questions

I have had a joint replaced... do I need antibiotics before my dental appointment?

Likely no! Please see the consensus statement on antibiotic prophylaxis for patients with total joint replacements at the following link:

https://www.cda-adc.ca/en/about/position_statements/jointreplacement/

I have a heart condition…. Do I need antibiotics before my dental appointment?

Many patients who were previously provided antibiotics to prevent infective endocarditis prior to dental appointments (heart murmur, mitral valve prolapse, rheumatic heart disease, aortic stenosis and congenital heart conditions), no longer require premedication. Please see the following link for further information about which patients still require premedication.

https://www.cda-adc.ca/en/about/position_statements/infectiveendocarditis/

Fluoride to prevent cavities… is it safe?

We believe the appropriate use of fluorides in dentistry is one of the most successful preventive health measures in the history of health care. Please see the following link for information on fluoride including toothpaste/rinses and community water fluoridation.

https://www.cda-adc.ca/en/about/position_statements/fluoride/

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

Earlier than you think! Your child should see a dentist with the eruption of their first tooth or by age 1. We look forward to getting to know your child so they can become comfortable in our office and not fearful of the dentist. We would like to help you in protecting your child’s teeth and preventing future dental problems.

Please see the following information sheets to assist you as new parents in caring for your child’s teeth.

Are dental X-rays necessary?

There are areas in your mouth (developing teeth, roots, unerupted teeth, bone and between the teeth where cavities commonly develop) we cannot see without taking a dental x-ray. Our office uses digital x-rays which expose patients to far less radiation than conventional x-rays. Please know we only take x-rays when we require them to provide you with the best care and an accurate diagnosis. We will customize how often we recommend you have x-rays taken based on your risk for cavities, any symptoms you may have and your preferences. Please feel free to speak to us if you are concerned and see the following link for more information.
